This paper aims at analysing the participial constructions between Latin and Romance on the basis of the observation of two specific texts, the Latin Factorum et dictorum memorabilium libri by Valerius Maximus (1st century AD) and its Sicilian translation dating back to the fourteenth century. By examining how the different types of participles occurring in the source text are managed by the translator, not only an overall restructuring of the system of participial small clauses is observable, but also interesting elements of continuity especially related to government properties. Moreover, the analysis can represent a contribution to the understanding of the elaboration processes of medieval and modern written Romance languages.
