The Friuli Venezia Giulia Region was hit by the pandemics but with a weaker violence than that characterizing many other Northern Italian Region, particularly in the Po Valley area, particularly during the first Covid-19 pandemic wave. The region adopted earlier than other most of Italian regions policies of school closures and restrictions to mobility, in line with those adopted by the most hit neighboring region as Veneto. The region has been characterized by a spatial distribution of cases and deaths related to Covid-19 that can be seen with respect to the geographic peculiarities of the area, as a high percentage of the regional surface covered by mountains and therefore with a structure of the settlements as organized along alpine valleys, a high percentage of third-age population and, at the same time, a lower population if compared to other Northern regions. Furthermore, the region appears peripherals both in terms of inner flows and external connections, particularly if compared to the Po Valley metropolis. The work done so far, focuses on the spatial characters of Friuli Venezia Giulia, with particular reference to its physical and human geography, providing a visualization of the diffusion, in different moments, of the pandemics in the Region’s Municipalities, looking in particular into the population structure (to observe the ageing of population) and analyzing also the perception of the effects of the pandemics on a sample of University students.
