Abstract

It is a common opinion that the Cuman Sibylline books were pervaded by Apollonism; actually, the relationship between the books and the Apollonian environment does not appear, upon examination of the data, so univocal and unidirectional. Several episodes mark as many milestones in the acquisition of the god in Rome, milestones in which the books and responses provided by the sacris faciundis priests seem to orient the figure of the god, according to a theological framework compatible with the cultural horizon of the civitas and coherent with the religious demands emerging at that time.
