Abstract

Since Roman times, Campania was very famous for its large number of thermal baths and mineral water springs. Hundreds of thermal springs were known. However, as well as other parts of Europe, Campania's thermal baths have gone through intermittent and controversial phases, so much so that they were abandoned for a long time and rediscovered between the centuries, XIV and XV. They achieved their greatest heights in the last years of the XIX century, during the so-called Belle Époque era. As matter of fact, some of them were indeed beautiful because they were designed as Villes d’eaux and fitted with many buildings of architectonic value, such as Telese, Agnano Terme and Castellammare di Stabia. Since the second half of the XX century, they were slowly abandoned, and the progressive process of degradation has damaged almost of them. Despite that, the thermal towns represent a landmark for the rituals of mankind and the history of civilization. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the typological evolution and definition of Campania Region's thermal baths to acknowledge their historical identity as places of memory and cultural heritage to be preserved because, to this day, most of them are completely wrecked or abandoned.
