Abstract

Although largely documented with diverse exegetic perspectives, Aversa’s Real Casa de’ Matti (Royal House of Lunatics) still offers original investigative paths. Starting from the innovative contributions that this institution gave to modern psychiatry and mental hospital architecture design, the study delves into the architectural and urban changes that the conversion into insane asylums produced within Aversa’s historic center and its former monasteries, where the mental hospital branches and its criminal seat were housed.
