Questo saggio intende offrire un contributo allo studio dei rapporti tra complessi espositivi e palinsesti urbani, analizzando il testo che il sociologo Georg Simmel dedicava all’Esposizione industriale berlinese del 1896. L’obiettivo è far emergere l’importanza che i principi di permanenza e transitorietà acquistano nel determinare le diverse dinamiche sociali ‘messe in scena’ all’interno degli spazi espositivi. Comportamenti degli individui, modalità di consumo e di esposizione delle merci, forme architettoniche e soluzioni urbanistiche, tutto, in questa come nelle altre grandi Esposizioni del tempo, sembra ineluttabilmente assumere i caratteri ormai tipici della cultura moderna e occidentale. This essay intends to offer a contribution to the study of the relationships between exhibition complexes and urban palimpsest, analyzing the text that the sociologist Georg Simmel dedicated to the Berlin Industrial Exhibition of 1896. The aim is to highlight the importance that the principles of permanence and transience they acquire in determining the different social dynamics ‘staged’ within the exhibition spaces. Behaviors of individuals, ways of consuming and displaying goods, architectural forms and urban planning solutions, everything, in this as in the other great Exhibitions of the time, inevitably seems to assume the characteristics that are now typical of modern and Western culture.
