Andreotti e la Germania: un lungo e difficile rapporto da De Gasperi all’Unione europea

Già considerato un fidato amico della Repubblica Federale di Germania nei suoi lunghi anni di governo Andreotti divenne per molti tedeschi un’irriducibile oppositore dell’unità tedesca a causa delle sue dichiarazioni del settembre 1984. Certamente vi era inizialmente contrario per la sua storia personale, con i ricordi dell’occupazione nazista di Roma e, soprattutto, per i pericoli per la pace nel caso di una riunificazione non accettata dall’Urss e staccata dal processo d’integrazione europea che era uno degli scopi principali della sua politica nella scia dell’insegnamento del suo maestro politico Alcide De Gasperi. Tuttavia, a differenza della signora Thatcher, egli l’accettò poi con convinzione quando essa ottenne l’assenso dell’URSS e fu legata alla creazione dell’Unione economica e monetaria, dell’Unione Europea e al rafforzamento della CSCE. Andreotti shocked the German political world with his public statements of September 1984 when he strongly opposed the reunification of Germany. He was the first member of a government allied to the Federal Republic to express himself in this way. In fact, Andreotti feared serious dangers to peace if the German reunification took place outside a European framework and against the Soviet Union with which he, even within the framework of Atlantic solidarity, had always tried to mantain good relations relations. However, while not foreseeing it unlike Mitterand, he accepted it with conviction, when it obtained the consent of the USSR and was linked to the creation of the Economic and Monetary Union, of the European Union and to the strengthening of the CSCE thus sealing the end of the division of Europe and the advancement of the process of European unification which were priorities of his policy.
