As well known, wi-fi is the widespread technology that allows to connect to the web using radio waves, without a physical connection. Hotspots are the sites where it’s available a public internet access over a wireless local area network. Recently public utilities or business activities like restaurants, hotels, train stations, airports, hospitals, universities, book stores become often paid or free hotspots and their number is quickly growing. This paper maps the hotspots located in the urban areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (Northeastern Italy). We analyze their spatial distribution within four towns (Trieste, Udine, Gorizia, Pordenone), in order to understand the urban role in the advance of the free wi-fi public access in this region.

Abstract
As well known, wi-fi is the widespread technology that allows to connect to the web using radio waves, without a physical connection. Hotspots are the sites where it’s available a public internet access over a wireless local area network. Recently public utilities or business activities like restaurants, hotels, train stations, airports, hospitals, universities, book stores become often paid or free hotspots and their number is quickly growing. This paper maps the hotspots located in the urban areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (Northeastern Italy). We analyze their spatial distribution within four towns (Trieste, Udine, Gorizia, Pordenone), in order to understand the urban role in the advance of the free wi-fi public access in this region.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
