This essay, for the first time in the history of the studies, aims to reconstruct the artistic and literary environment of the maternal family of Luigi Vanvitelli, emphasizing the importance of the maternal grandfather for the initial formation of the architect, the medalist, collector and man of letters Giovan Andrea Lorenzani, a prominent figure in the Roman cultural environment of the second half of the XVII century. He favored his young nephew Luigi Vanvitelli and left his library and collection to his daughter Anna. Luigi Vanvitelli grew up in a family circumstances full of incentives not only to figurative arts, but also to literature and especially to music. Vanvitelli’s entry into the Roman Accademia dell’Arcadia is another important component for understanding the classicist orientation of his architecture.
