A number of sepulchral Latin carmina involve varied speakers – the dead, his/her relatives, the anonymous passerby, the monument itself – who enter into a dialogical interaction with each other. This paper aims to analyze how the change of speaker can be made perceptible, focusing both on the textual elements (grammatical and syntactic forms, language, use of the meter, etc.) and the extra-textual marks (layout, letter forms, punctuation and particular graphic signs) – that help to identify and distinguish these different voices.

Abstract

A number of sepulchral Latin carmina involve varied speakers – the dead, his/her relatives, the anonymous passerby, the monument itself – who enter into a dialogical interaction with each other. This paper aims to analyze how the change of speaker can be made perceptible, focusing both on the textual elements (grammatical and syntactic forms, language, use of the meter, etc.) and the extra-textual marks (layout, letter forms, punctuation and particular graphic signs) – that help to identify and distinguish these different voices.
