The vicissitudes of the royal family were, for the city of Naples, a constant reason to organize festive and theatrical manifestations in which the images of royal power, spectator and actor of scenographic architecture, at the same time, were celebrated in a spectacular way. On these occasions, the architect became an ephemeral designer but also an interpreter of magnificence and power symbols, examples of the artistic taste of the time. In 1791, the Naples government organized a contest among the best architects to design a party project comissioned on the occasion of the royal family’s return from Vienna to the city.
