The UN Charter provides a role for Regional Organizations and Arrangements in the maintenance of peace and security. At the end of the Cold War, Regional Organisations were prompetd or even forced to reconsider their strategy and to redefine their mandate. This essay summarizes the changing context for peace operations and its implications for cooperation between the UN and Regional Organizations, and among Regional Organizations themselves.
