Abstract

The fourth century city walls of Benevento enclosed about the half part of the Roman town, that is only the hilly zone; the flat area of Cellarulo was abandoned on account of the economic and demographic crisis and of the floods that had affected Cellarulo. The devastating earthquake of 346 d.C. contributed to undertake extensive renovation of the city: with the city walls was built the Cathedral. The building materials were taken perhaps from the amphitheater that in the fifth century was already demolished. After the construction of the Civitas nova (about 774), the city gate functions moved from arch of Sacramento to porta Nova.
