Terra di Lavoro e la nascita dell'identità moderna

Despite the lack of geographical homogeneity and the mutability of borders, the Terra di Lavoro continues to be characterized by an indisputable historical unity. Established as one of the 12 provinces of the Kingdom of Naples, this area has been associated, above all, with the flatlands of the ancient Campania Felix whose center was the city of Capua. Once a rich agricultural area, whose dominating symbols were the tree and the vine, throughout the modern age the prosperity of the province was attributed to its relationship with the capital of the kingdom,consolidated especially during the Spanish dominion, when the territory was structured in directives that served the purpose of organizing through a multiplicity of lines the connections between the capital and the different centers of the province. The proximity of Naples has certainly encouraged the growth of the Terra di Lavoro, but has also constituted a downside: the privileged relationship with this city has inhibited the development of autonomous urban forms,all of which were redeemed by the cumbersome capital
