In the first period of the Cold War between West and East, Giulio Andreotti was considered to be a right wing Christian-Democrat and a strong supporter of the NATO. Actually, Andreotti, a master of political tactics, a believer in an united Europe and a devout catholic closely connected to the Vatican, tried to mediate with Soviet Union in order to avoid a real war and to achieve the Detente although in the framework of the Atlantic Alliance and the friendship to the USA. As Foreign and then Prime Minister in the 70’s and 80’s he contributed to the end of the Cold War by strongly supporting the peace policy of Soviet leader Gorbachev
