“Vanvitelli’s Palace” is an ancient monastery broadly modified and enlarged with the church in the latter half of the 18th century. The unpublished documentary going-over and the fabric stratigraphy and archeology surveying with the chrono-typology comparison of walls and stonework have allowed to reveal features and operational procedures of that extensive restoration work, carried out to it since 1775 for a decade at least by an almost unknown Neapolitan architect: Michelangelo Arinelli. They have been documented roles, works, and building methods of that expensive renewal and reinstatement, highlighting the decisive contribution given to it by the well-known master masons from Sanseverino’s feudal State, as well. The paper leads to interesting conclusions about the 18th-century restoration design of the religious architecture, showing a precious and early instance of the “stylistic” approach in that field, so revealing Arinelli’s real appreciation of the historical-artistic value of past testimony, so far as to reinstate it. By depicting his background and cultural context as well, the study has been aimed at stimulating further investigations to deepen Arinelli’s professional skills.

Il “Palazzo vanvitelliano” a Mercato è un’antica struttura domenicana profondamente trasformata con la vicina chiesa nel secondo Settecento. La restituzione di un inedito corpus documentale, vagliato attraverso la lettura stratigrafica della fabbrica e il confronto cronotipologico di murature, apparati e finiture, ha consentito di dettagliare caratteri, criteri e modalità attuative della rifattione tardosettecentesca, attribuendola al pressoché sconosciuto architetto Michelangelo Arinelli. Oltre a ricostruire ruoli, realizzazioni e organizzazione dei lavori dell’imponente e costosa trasfigurazione - forse nemmeno propriamente ultimata a giudicare dalle fronti lasciate a vista - ed a contribuire, altresì, alla conoscenza della nota genia di artefici dello Stato di Sanseverino, lo studio fornisce interessanti spunti di riflessione sulle modalità d’intervento nel restauro degli edifici religiosi, illustrando un peculiare episodio di ripristino stilistico ante litteram che, particolarmente, sottolinea le doti non comuni del tecnico napoletano, la cui storia professionale attende ancora di essere compiutamente indagata
