Between the 18th and 19th century, the favorite sites to visit in the Grand Tour in the South of Italy were Naples, the Campi Flegrei for the fascination of the mythological places and for the beauty and energy of nature, the buried cities of Ercolano and Pompei and finally Paestum for a renewed interest in a “different” ancient architecture. Not many people went beyond, to Nocera dei Pagani, Cava dei Tirreni, Salerno, Persano and beyond to south, to Velia, Palinuro, Camerota, Sapri e Maratea. This unusual itinerary to discover the antiquities and the nature along the coastal areas beyond the gulf of Salerno and in many little towns inland was the subject of a new guide Le Memorie di Storia Naturale del litorale tirreno della Lucania in oggi detto Principato di Salerno written by Niccolò Carletti in 1794 and unpublished for the death of its author. Reflecting the spirit of the Enlightenment, the manuscript describes all aspects of these areas, not only history, architecture and art but also sites of natural, geological, botanical and geographical interest. The choice of Carletti, well-read man, to write this guide probably reflected an interest really shared with travelers of that time in this areas. My paper focuses on this itinerary through the examination of the books and the iconographic albums about it.
