The article focuses on the livelihood strategies of women metalworkers in front of the crisis of the FIAT Melfi factory, passed, after the merger with Chrysler in 2009, from an old phase of secure job to a new phase of uncertainty. The interviews carried out ten years ago suggested a relatively short-term vision, after 21 yeras the new period of reduced production and redundancy payment have strongly sapped the women workers, generating new forms of informal work, that defines non a simple "survival" of past experiences, but a re-signification of economic and cultural behaviors thet draw on past local experience thet proves to be useful in the present. At global level, the last vestiges of the Italian myth of Fiat can be seen as an expression of a more general transformation of global industry, set within the crisis currently faced by Western economies.
