The earthquake that took place on the sixth of April 2009 in the district of L'Aquila polarized the interest of researchers and technicians on the structural assessment of existing masonry buildings, with particular regard to the ones belonging to the small historical centres of Abruzzi. In particular the structural behaviour of churches built in the 16 th century and their seismic response have been carefully analyzed. The current paper presents a study regarding the St. Gemma Church in Goriano Sicoli, that has been seriously damaged by the earthquake. A sophisticated finite element numerical model is proposed. It has been calibrated on the basis of a full scale experimental activity, previously carried out by means of ambient vibration tests, which are allowed to characterize the dynamic behaviour of the church also taking into account cracks and damages of the masonry walls.

Abstract
The earthquake that took place on the sixth of April 2009 in the district of L'Aquila polarized the interest of researchers and technicians on the structural assessment of existing masonry buildings, with particular regard to the ones belonging to the small historical centres of Abruzzi. In particular the structural behaviour of churches built in the 16 th century and their seismic response have been carefully analyzed. The current paper presents a study regarding the St. Gemma Church in Goriano Sicoli, that has been seriously damaged by the earthquake. A sophisticated finite element numerical model is proposed. It has been calibrated on the basis of a full scale experimental activity, previously carried out by means of ambient vibration tests, which are allowed to characterize the dynamic behaviour of the church also taking into account cracks and damages of the masonry walls.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
