A review of the main sEEG findings in psychotic, affective and catatonic syndromes is provided. The sEEG findings are discussed with particular reference to their prognostic implications and to the differential diagnosis with general medical conditions (GMCs) which might present with psychiatric symptomatology. It is argued that recent onset patients with psychosis should be screened for CNS pathology and that sEEG should be among the routine examinations. A clinical vignette concerning the differential diagnosis between schizophrenia and fronto-temporal dementia is included. sEEG findings relevant to the exclusion of epilepsy (including non-convulsive status epilepticus), and focal or general encephalopathies are reviewed. As to catatonic syndromes, several case series are summarized to illustrate the possible etiologies of catatonia and the work-up of patients which is needed to exclude GMCs.
