The author tries to outline a concept of identity appropriate to the variety of often contrasting meanings that identity has assumed in the current debate. For this purpose the author analyses the contrasts that concern the concept of identity on a methodological, logical and political-sociological level. He examines a series of distinctions between identity as a category of analysis and identity as a category of practice, between methodological identity and real identity, between identity as a structure of social life and identity as a product of social construction in order to define the problem of identity and its multiple aspects.
