The author proposes an interpretation of Heinrich Rickert’s methodology of cultural sciences focused on the problem of the determination of historical material. He shows how the concepts of “historical center” and “empathy” (Hineinleben) that Heinrich Rickert uses for this purpose are not compatible with the foundations of his theory of knowledge.
