This work faces the extremely delicate issue of the environmental rehabilitation of the Sarno basin, debated for years. The river, because of continuous human-made aggressions, is in a very serious environmental situation determined, above all, by the discharge of civil, agricultural and industrial settlements. The elevated human presence, the development of agroalimentary and chemical industries, and tanneries as well, have been the main causes of the pollution of the river. Also fertilizers and pesticides, used in the intensive agricultural activities that are present on the territory have contributed to make the situation worse. The river Sarno represents a “potential” element of ecological connection among the great basins of nature surrounding it: it can play, therefore, an important role in carrying out a local ecological network able to be linked with that one of a regional level. However it involves the necessity to plan a series of interventions of environmental rehabilitation aimed, on the one hand, at the improvement of the eco-systemic quality of the river and territories crossed by it, on the other hand, at the development of the territorial connectivity, interrupted in many parts by human-made interventions. Finally we make a particular reflection on the role that the “network system” plays in the interventions of environmental rehabilitation. Such a system, coming from the overlap and the following intersection of infrastructural, ecological and interconnection networks represents a fundamental element for the management of the territory. Through its correct management, in fact, it is possible to start a process of environmental reconversion aimed, on the one hand, at the maintenance and rehabilitation of the natural resources present on the territory, on the other hand, at the connection between the environmental and landscape values of the areas.
