Learning from periurban. Laboratories in the operational landscape between Napoli and Caserta

In the peri-urban area between Naples and Caserta, the territory traversed by the Regi Lagni is taken as a case study for sustainability education grounded in connections and stitching across fragments. The contribution reconstructs the set-up and delivery of the Urban Design Laboratory of the Department of Architecture and Industrial Design at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli,” which worked in the area between the municipalities of Marcianise and Caivano, using the Caserta PTCP and the Masterplan documentation as shared bases for reading and design. Attention is directed to thresholds and edges between productive areas, ERP housing estates and agricultural fabrics, reframing dross-scapes and interstices as operational resources. The actions explored—targeted renaturalisation, de-impermeabilisation, riparian vegetation, linear afforestation and new connections—are considered replicable interventions that hold together territorial ecology and public space. Along the identified margins, the stitching devised by the student groups recalibrates compatibilities between functions and uses.
