On-going interdisciplinary researchers are exploring the reuse of secondary raw materials from the ornamental stone-cutting industry. The project’s overarching goal is to develop sustainable materials for technological innovation in construction, with a view to the circular economy. On this regard, Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) from sawing sludge wastes synthesized without any treatments or addition of supplementary sources have been investigated. AAMs represent a suitable sustainable alternative to the common widely used construction material Ordinary Portland Cement, responsible for the 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions. AAMs are inorganic materials obtained from the reaction of an alkaline activator with an aluminosilicate source. In this study five sawing sludge wastes have been activated with NaOH 4 and 8 M and characterized through Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy. This latter allows to understand the covalent bonds formed in the consolidated materials. Moreover, the integrity test has been carried out to understand the samples’ stability. Water leaching from the integrity test has been used to measure pH and ionic conductivity. These results represent a step forward in the characterisation and optimisation of formulations and a starting point for their application in specific contexts.
