The title indicates the themes of this contribution: the disciplinary functions of toponymy and its multidisciplinary dimension/location between geography and linguistics, with an examination of the main lines of toponymy research in Italy over the last fifty years. In addition, it recalls the methodological principle of always referring the toponymy investigation (both in geographic studies and in linguistic research) to the geographic features, linguistic peculiarities, historical events of the territory studied and the documentation (archival or edited) relating to it. In the review of the main directions of toponymy research from the 1970s to the present, will be highlighted the shared fields of study and methodological convergences/distances between geographers and linguists.
