The contribution intends to investigate the joint role of environmental factors and social dynamics in the definition of a solid productive identity, through the emblematic case of straw manufacturing in the Florentine Plain, interpreted as an urban and territorial space of convergence of knowledge and practices. Through historical, textual and iconographic sources, the relationship between territory, production and exchanges by the local community and other external cultures is questioned.
