Abstract

The evolution of avionics systems is fueled by advances in communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) technologies and by the adoption of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) both onboard aerospace vehicles and in ground-based decision support systems. Safety, efficiency, security, and environmental sustainability requirements impact the successful development and deployment of the new technologies. Technological advances of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and the maturation of UAS traffic management (UTM) and urban air mobility (UAM) will reshape future aviation scenarios, but they present technical and operational challenges, together with the need to deal with social, economic, and environmental impacts. Avionics and air traffic management (ATM) systems, as well as space traffic management (STM) systems are prone to new vulnerabilities and require cyber-resilience and multi-domain traffic management.
