Essere artefici del proprio prestigio: i segni dell’identità sociale nella committenza libraria di Antonello Petrucci (†1487)

Antonello Petrucci, di umili origini, divenuto segretario di re Ferrante nel 1458, scelse per sé e per la sua stirpe un blasone raffigurante un’aquila nera a volo spiegato su fondo scuro o dorato. Homo novus, Petrucci aveva necessità di accreditare il suo nome presso la corte aragonese e il suo entourage. Strumento per mettere in rilievo la sua nuova condizione sociale, elevata ulteriormente con l’acquisto delle contee di Policastro nel 1465 e di Carinola nel 1480, fu anche la committenza artistica, in particolare di manoscritti di lusso di cui il Segretario arricchì la sua biblioteca personale. Più o meno riccamente miniati, alcuni di questi volumi presentano, accanto alla decorazione a bianchi girari in voga nella Napoli della metà del Quattrocento, lo stemma di Petrucci. L’articolo mira a gettare luce sull’uso delle armi araldiche nei libri realizzati per il Segretario, con l’intento di indagare la relazione tra le tipologie librarie, la decorazione, la presenza dello stemma e il tentativo di promuovere il proprio casato.

Antonello Petrucci, of humble origin, who became secretary to King Ferrante in 1458, chose for himself and his lineage a blazon depicting a black eagle displayed on a dark or golden background. Homo novus, Petrucci needed to accredit his name with the Aragonese court and its entourage. A way to highlight his new social status, further elevated with the purchase of the counties of Policastro in 1465 and Carinola in 1480, was also artistic patronage, particularly of luxury manuscripts with which the Secretary enriched his personal library. More or less richly illuminated, some of these volumes show the Petrucci coat of arms next to the bianchi girari decoration popular in mid-15th-century Naples. The article aims to shed light on the use of heraldic arms in books made for the Secretary, with the intention of investigating the relationship between book types, decoration, the presence of the Petrucci coat of arms and the attempt to promote his lineage.
