We present a hybrid Brillouin optical frequency/correlation domain analysis (BOFDA/BOCDA) configuration, which can be applied for distributed static and dynamic strain measurements. Compared to a conventional BOFDA configuration, an additional frequency modulation is applied to the interacting beams, which synthesizes one (or more) correlation peaks along the sensing fiber. In such a way, the number of modulation frequencies scanned by the vector network analyzer employed for BOFDA measurements can be strongly reduced, with consequent reduction of the measurement time. We experimentally validate the proposed method by acquiring the static and dynamic strain along a 50-cm cantilever beam, at 5-cm spatial resolution and 40-Hz sampling rate.
