The contribution deals with the theme of the valorisation of fortified architecture on the Mediterranean coasts, with particular attention to the sustainable dimension of the project, starting from a few case studies chosen both for having over time assumed a central role in the network of diachronic models in the urban fabric and productive life of a city (human centred thinking), and for the high environmental value that guides the qualities and dimensions of the physical change of the landscape (environment centred thinking). The goal is to systematise innovative strategies and complex needs, both of users and of the urban system with which they interact, in compliance with the principles of conservation of the assets. Sharing the idea of tourism that integrates economic and cultural valorisation, sustainable approaches are the key through which to promote, while respecting memory, dynamic processes of transformation, and renewal of local cultural values, also taking into account the safeguard criteria proposed by UNESCO.
