This paper intends to investigate how Aeschylus in the Suppliants intervenes subtly on the epic model to transfigure in the ancestral time the ideality, almost contemporary with the representation of tragedy (late 60s of the fifth century BC), of democracy, understood in its essential and general meaning of deliberative power attributed to the assembly. The historicity of the Suppliants is measured on the nature of Pelasgus’ kingship, not alike to that of the heroic age, on the interaction between sovereign and people, on the linguistic inventiveness that echoes or announces the word δημοκρατία.

Abstract

This paper intends to investigate how Aeschylus in the Suppliants intervenes subtly on the epic model to transfigure in the ancestral time the ideality, almost contemporary with the representation of tragedy (late 60s of the fifth century BC), of democracy, understood in its essential and general meaning of deliberative power attributed to the assembly. The historicity of the Suppliants is measured on the nature of Pelasgus’ kingship, not alike to that of the heroic age, on the interaction between sovereign and people, on the linguistic inventiveness that echoes or announces the word δημοκρατία.
