Abstract
As for today, meta-materials represent a new research field in noise control. Metamaterials are artificial structures made with periodic elements and the attenuation of sound is due to the destructive inter-ference that is generated when the wave crosses the lattice. The idea of investigating practical applica-tions of metamaterials started with some pioneering work in the electromagnetic field for wave control which yields subsequently, in the early 2000, to apply the concepts of structural geometries periodicities to the field of applied acoustics for the control of noise propagation. An historical example of ap-plied acoustic using metamaterials goes back to the period of World War II were some German sub-marines were covered with periodic rubber structures to reduce the effects of the acoustic waves emit-ted by the sonar of British ships, these structures were called metamaterialsI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
