The paper focuses on the first data from the study of the pottery found during the excavation of the complex of Sant’Ilario a Port’Aurea located in the north-eastern area of the historical centre of Benevento. The church was built between the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 8th century near the Trajan’s arch, at that time incorporated into the walls and called “Porta’Aurea”. Soon after the first cenobitic nucleus was added to the worship hall. The archaeological surveys in the area, carried out with funding for setting up of the Park of the Trajan’s arch, date back to 2001-2002. Since 2019 the team of medieval archaeologists of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, through the authorization issued by the Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape Archaeology for the provinces of Caserta and Benevento, began to study the excavation documentation, so far unpublished, and the numerous ceramic finds, belonging to different types of pottery used by the Benedictine community.
