Abstract
The “irregular” masonry walls, better qualified as “complex” ones – i.e., mostly made of rough stones – substantiate a long-term phenomenon in walling history. The survey of philologically dated, congener wall faces – possibly, investigated at their vertical and horizontal sections – coordinated with stratigraphic readings of the building facades they belong to and researching of historic sources, in some areas highlighted the long-term use of a type of this masonry denoted by horizontal coursed rough stones set in mortar, approximately, at a periodic size (“a cantieri”). For example, in Campania, this practice lasted from Middle Ages to the end of Modernity, at least. Starting from the methodology defining this field, the paper focused on the territorial and chronological variations of this masonry technique - in particular, looking at the Campania’s built heritage - and the possible nexuses with the coeval architectural and constructive solutions and socioeconomic and cultural scenarios.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
