The paper focuses – on the theoretical level and in terms of social design – on the toy as an element able to offer the experience of educational and therapeutic methodologies and to communicate social models of inclusion, participation, and care for the community. In the twentieth century, play has emerged as a field of research of exceptional scope, particularly in Italy where authorial design has met contemporary pedagogy. The theme of the Toy Libraries, which first emerged in Los Angeles in the 1930s, is reinterpreted and implemented through design-oriented strategies and actions capable of activating participation and development processes.

Abstract

The paper focuses – on the theoretical level and in terms of social design – on the toy as an element able to offer the experience of educational and therapeutic methodologies and to communicate social models of inclusion, participation, and care for the community. In the twentieth century, play has emerged as a field of research of exceptional scope, particularly in Italy where authorial design has met contemporary pedagogy. The theme of the Toy Libraries, which first emerged in Los Angeles in the 1930s, is reinterpreted and implemented through design-oriented strategies and actions capable of activating participation and development processes.
