Abstract

In the second half of the twentieth century, also Italy witnessed the spread of standardized industrialized construction, as a rapid and advanced method in the difficult process of reconstruction, for the mass dimension assumed by housing issues and the need for a drastic reduction of costs. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Ernesto Nathan Rogers urged architects to abandon the artisan dimension and explore the industrial one, through the standardization and prefab of building elements in all its forms. The aim of the paper is to present the contribution by Angelo Mangiarotti in the field of industrial design. Architect and designer, born in Milan in 1921, trained in the lessons of Rogers, he experimented from a very young age with a compositional method based on modular construction and coordination between standardized elements. The horizon opened up by prefabrication, as codified by Konrad Wachsmann, takes on a high degree of creativity in Mangiarotti's works, expressed within the apparently fixed meshes of standardisation. In the many industrialized systems he patents, Briona, Yardleys, Nustru, the structural frame is the result of unprecedented and each time different combinatorial capacities dictated by simplification, rationality, repetition, satisfaction of utility.
