Refurbishment of ancient timber structures requires the knowledge of the actual physical and mechanical properties of the base material, which is subjected to huge degradation phenomena during its life. In this paper the results of a wide experimental campaign on ancient Italian spruce and poplar timber elements based on both resistographic NDT and destructive tests are presented. The specimens have been extracted from the roof structure of the "Villa Raccamadoro Ravelli" (XIXth century) located in Monte Urano - Fermo - Italy. A correlation between NDTs and the destructive tests is presented and a comparison with a previous similar investigation on new spruce wood and ancient chestnut elements is provided. Furthermore the results of experimental tests performed on defect-free ancient wooden specimens connected by means of metal fasteners are synthesised. Embedding tests have been performed in order to investigate and evaluate the stiffness properties and bearing capacity of a connection commonly used in ancient floor slabs for long-span beams. In this case, the wooden samples have been extracted from chestnut beams aged 1700-1800, withdrawn from an ancient building located in the historical centre of Naples (Italy).
