Three-dimensional or „stereoscopic‟ photography, a historic forerunner of contemporary virtual reality, had great success and diffusion from the 1870s until the 1930s. Many bourgeois travellers and amateur photographers were fascinated by this technique. Using thin glass plates, they captured images of everyday life, urban sites and landscapes, but also of museum collections and monuments. Frequently, these photographers were different from their commercial colleagues of their days, as to the formal aspects and selection of topics. They thus contributed to deepening the knowledge of the visited sites. Among the few surviving archives of stereoscopic slides, that of Pier Luigi Pretti (1868- 1934), a physician based in Naples, has remained unexplored. The current study focuses on Pretti‟s slides, which through binocular lenses, reveal intriguing “new” views of Naples and some other European cities.
