The mechanism of deformation and rupture of stiff overconsolidated intact clays is a subject of relevant importance. With regard to this, a number of researchers have recently stressed the role of strain localisation, which leads to formation of shear zones: failure is the final result of such a process. In the case of intensely fissured clay shales too, rupture is characterised by sliding along a shear surface, but this represents the envelope of pre-existing fissures. Similarities and differences in the behaviour of such materials are described using some results of a laboratory program concerning the Bisaccia clay shale.

Abstract
The mechanism of deformation and rupture of stiff overconsolidated intact clays is a subject of relevant importance. With regard to this, a number of researchers have recently stressed the role of strain localisation, which leads to formation of shear zones: failure is the final result of such a process. In the case of intensely fissured clay shales too, rupture is characterised by sliding along a shear surface, but this represents the envelope of pre-existing fissures. Similarities and differences in the behaviour of such materials are described using some results of a laboratory program concerning the Bisaccia clay shale.File in questo prodotto:
