The evaluation of design lateral forces and seismic safety of base-isolated multistorey structures was discussed. At first the design forces for the structural elements above the isolation interface were calculated from the non-linear dynamic analysis, reduced by the q factor defined by SSN 1993. Then the results obtained for four different isolation devices were compared with the values deriving from the equivalent linear analysis, and with the design forces of fixed-base structures calculated from the response-spectrum analysis. At last, for base-isolated structures designed following SSN requirements, the evaluation of seismic safety using damage-functionals was carried out.
