Unmetabolized benzene and S-phenylmercapturic acid were determined in urine of twelve workers of a fuel deposit at the beginning and at the end of the shift. The obtained results evidenced an increment in the concentrations of both analytes in the end shift urine samples, although benzene excretion is much more influenced by smoking habits; moreover, obtained data showed the presence of a correlation between the urinary excretion of the two analytes and the different levels of exposure to benzene with respect to the specific duties.

Abstract

Unmetabolized benzene and S-phenylmercapturic acid were determined in urine of twelve workers of a fuel deposit at the beginning and at the end of the shift. The obtained results evidenced an increment in the concentrations of both analytes in the end shift urine samples, although benzene excretion is much more influenced by smoking habits; moreover, obtained data showed the presence of a correlation between the urinary excretion of the two analytes and the different levels of exposure to benzene with respect to the specific duties.
