A procedure based on experimental and theoretical analyses to evaluate the response of railway bridges under dynamic loading is presented. In particular an ancient railway bridge under service on the Avellino-Rocchetta-Foggia line in the Southern part of Italy was considered. A simplified procedure to study the vehicle-bridge interaction with a simple continuous beam model is proposed. The calibration of the model was carried out at first with the study of the technical reports, the visual inspection, the material tests and the dynamic tests. Then an identification procedure to characterize the presence of structural non-linearities is applied. Finally, the calibrated model of the bridge was used to perform modal analysis, to evaluate the magnification factor of the bridge and the acceleration response of the vehicle.
