ALLA PROVA DEL FUOCO. SOCIALISTI ITALIANI E SOCIALISTI FRANCESI DI FRONTE ALLA PRIMA GUERRA MONDIALE (1911-1916)

Yesterday as today the theme of war questions European consciences which, in the face of great tragedies, rediscover the ambiguity and complexity of the relationship between war and peace. In the experience of European socialism, linked to strong internationalist roots but also immersed in the national cultures of the nineteenth century, this dense problematic knot takes on the dimension of tensions experienced as fratricidal and irreconcilable, of an identity clash between those who justify the facts and those who prove them fights the war, this happened with particular intensity in the years from 1911 to 1916, when the war event tended to occupy the European scene in an increasingly visible and devastating way. This volume, based on extensive archival research and the press of the time, addresses an unprecedented comparison of two profoundly different thoughts, that of French socialism and that of Italian socialism, proposing an innovative interpretation of the complicated link between war and peace in the difficult conjuncture of the first world war.

Ieri come oggi il tema della guerra interroga le coscienze europee che puntualmente, di fronte al prodursi di grandi tragedie, riscoprono l'ambiguità e la complessità della relazione tra guerra e pace. Nell'esperienza del socialismo europeo, legato a forti radici internazionaliste ma immerso anche nelle culture nazionali del XIX secolo, questo denso nodo problematico assume la dimensione di tensioni vissute come fratricide e inconciliabili, di uno scontro identitario tra chi alla prova dei fatti giustifica e chi combatte la guerra, ciò accadde con particolare intensità negli anni che vanno dal 1911 al 1916, quando l'evento guerra tende ad occupare in maniera sempre più visibile e devastante la scena europea. Questo volume, basato su una estesa ricerca archivistica e sulla stampa del tempo, affronta una inedita comparazione di due pensieri profondamente diversi, quello del socialismo francese e quello del socialismo italiano, proponendo un'interpretazione innovativa del complicato legame tra guerra e pace nella difficile congiuntura della prima guerra mondiale.
