Abstract

The use of drugs is increasing containing tramadol for the treatment of acute and chronic pain and in post-surgical pain. Tramadol is a synthetic opioid and acts as central acting analgesic with a dual mechanism of action: as a micron receptor agonist and as a powerfull inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. Monitoring of tramadol is important as a replacement for symptomatic scales of pain in order to minimize the risk associated with adverse effects, mostly in the elderly, children and individuals who abuse. Some recent studies have shown a high variability in the individual response of the same dose of tramadol associates with genetic polymorphism of the enzymes responsible for its metabolism.Tramadol has low potential for psycophysical dependance; its adverse events represent an advantage over other opioids like agents.
