Juan Andrés represents a very particular figure among the Grand Tour travellers. He was one of the numerous Jesuits forced to leave Spain in 1767 to settle in Italy. Andrés has left us with an important account of his journeys throughout the peninsula, and from the content of his letters and from his continuous contacts with other foreign scholars, one understands that he was an exceptional scholar, bibliophile, promoter of scientific ethics, and lover of the Italian language. This Jesuit was certainly one of the most important scholars of his time.
