The ENEL has started working with the institute for Combustion research of the CRN in Naples - where an atmospheric fluidized bed of 370 mm, in diameter has been available for two years - on a series of research projects concerning the study and the use of water-coal mixtures in the traditional boiler and the boiler with fluidized bed. This study presents the first experimental results obtained with the equipment under review using a water-coal mixture under various operational conditions. The chosen feed system has given evidence of satisfactory reliability: it made possible the study of a sufficiently wide range of variables. The combustion proved efficient and in some cases higher than the combustion obtained during similar tests where bituminous coal of various dimensions had been used.
