α- Asarone, 9-hydroxylinolenic acid and stigmasta-4,22-diene-3,6-dione isolated from Pistia stratiotes and showing in vitro antialgal activity, have been found in the water in which the plant was cultivated. Of other antialgal compounds such as 9-hydroxy and 13-hydroxy-linoleic acids, coniferyl and sinapyl alcohols in the growth medium have also been identified. New phenyl propanoid glucosides and C13 norterpene glucosides have been isolated from the plant.
