Abstract

The study of Pierluigi Nervi's designs held at CSAC has helped to clarify his contribution to the construction of the Napoli Centrale Station, following the design contest in 1954 which was awarded to Nervi, Giuseppe Vaccaro, and Mario Campanella. The pillar drawings, dated 1955, allow further development of my essay: La costruzione della nuova stazione nel secondo Novecento, in La stazione Centrale di Napoli. Storia e architettura di un palinsesto urbano, edited by C. Lenza, Electa, Milano 2010, brought into light the project and execution process of the original roof, which constitutes the distinctive element of the Neapolitan railway building. Comparison with the project of the State Railway chief engineer, Paolo Perilli, further demonstrates the ability of Nervi to interact with other professionals involved on the construction site. In 1959, the collaboration between Nervi and Vaccaro, who focused on the creative phase, and Nervi, Viale and Campanella, entrusted with the structural design, was fundamental to the project success of the original skyscraper intended for office use.
